Welcome to Music Book!

Music Book is an innovative ensemble, combining live classical music with literature for young people through storytelling, dance, song, rhyme and movement.
We hope to inspire children to get excited about books, to enjoy and appreciate art and music, and to get up and shake it all about!
By exposing children to classical music in a relaxed and fun setting, Music Book hopes to create a new appreciative audience, while developing a love for the written and spoken word.
We have also worked with Dr Emma Jayakumar as a singer and narrator, and performed compositions such as The Shy Fellow who Swallowed a Cello, Old MacDonald, Once Upon a Time, the Anteater from Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes, and Mr McGee.

A highlight has been the performance of Teacup based on the award-winning picture book by Rebecca Young, illustrated by Matt Ottley. Matt Ottley composed the music, Rebecca Young wrote additional lyrics and Matt developed a film to accompany the performance, which we performed in the exhibition space of the State Library of Western Australia, surrounded by artwork from the book. We performed the work to over 1,200 people, and were invited to repeat the performance for The Literature Centre's 25 Birthday celebrations.
Music Book has performed with State Library of Western Australia, City of Bayswater, City of Melville, Town of Cottesloe, City of Perth, Town of Victoria Park, Hale School, St Marks School, and The Literature Centre in Fremantle.

The full Music Book experience for children:
  • Performances are usually tailored for pre-primary and primary school children.
  • We design each performance to ensure we keep the interest and attention of our audience.
  • Each performance is designed to interact and encourage active participation, and include storytelling, singing, dancing and percussion.
  • Books are shown on a projector screen, so illustrations can be enjoyed and our audience can read along with the narrator.
  • We are a flexible ensemble and shows are designed to suit any space, from the classroom to the stage.
  • We can provide extra materials after the performance, such as colouring-in sheets, details of books, musical instruments and musical terms – all related to the performance.

  • Mums & Bubs, Music for Seniors & Art Workshops for people living with dementia & their carers :
  • From 2017, we started bringing classical music to Parents, Grandparents, Bubs, Tiny Tots, People living with Dementia and  their Carers, and Seniors.
  • We perform casual, relaxing, low cost concerts for all ages, where the audience can meet and have a chat over a cuppa and a bikkie.
  • Parents can expose their babies and tiny tots to beautiful classical music, where they can feel free to feed their bubs, and tiny tots can play with their toys or colour-in to their hearts content.
  • We provide beautiful music, performed by quality musicians, to accompany Art Workshops for those living with dementia and their carers, called Art & Soul.

  • "Music Book presented a delightful Christmas concert incorporating music, books and stories as well as encouraging audience participation and interaction. A wonderful experience for young and old. Highly recommended for anyone looking for awesome entertainment!" (Hilary Hatfield, Community Liaison Librarian: Children and Families, State Library of Western Australia )
